The news that has been doing the rounds for sometime now is about the search for the heroine of Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder's flick Tees Maar Khan. The film has been in news since its announcement. First it was Akshay replacing SRK as the lead, followed by the 'namesake' casting coup, wherein Akshaye Khanna was roped in for the film.

As far as the heroine for the film was concerned, the rumor mills went overboard with names that ranged from Sonam Kapoor to Deepika Padukone and likes. But, according to Bollywood Hungama's confirmed sources it is neither Sonam, nor Deepika, because it is Katrina Kaif! When we spoke to Shirish to confirm the news, all that he said was, "I cannot say anything right now. I can only speak about it in a couple of days." Our source also went onto add that the trio of Akshay, Katrina and Farah have shot a cover page shoot for a daily (which is supposed to be out in a couple of days) to announce the coming on board of Katrina as Tees Maar Khan's leading lady.

With Katrina coming on board, expectations are bound to be sky-high about Tees Maar Khan, considering the hit track record that Akki-Katz have delivered in the past, like Namastey London, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng to name a few. What remains to be seen is that will Tees Maar Khan follow suit or will it create a new track record?

Pak tunnels near border worry government

NEW DELHI: As the war of words between India and Pakistan reaches a crescendo, New Delhi has cause for fresh alarm, due to some of the activities being carried out across the border. Intelligence agencies in India have brought to the notice of the government that Pakistan has been frantically building up tunnels in areas not far from the border with India.

According to these inputs, the tunnels have been dug up in the Sargodha district of Pakistani Punjab and can even be noticed by, as a top intelligence officer put it, a discerning eye on Google satellite imagery. "An attempt is being made to establish the purpose of digging up such tunnels which are really big in size. These clearly can't be meant for transport as is obvious from the images available; unlike ordinary tunnels they don't lead on to roads," said the official who is involved in analysing the information.

Pakistan is well within its rights to carry out any construction work on its territory and Islamabad is known to have constructed storage sheds for missiles and weapons in Sargodha, a known nuclear installation, in the past. However, the sheer size of the tunnels and the fact that these don't seem to be leading on to roads have raised suspicion that these could be used to store nuclear weapons or missiles which are battle ready.

The official said Pakistan has been known to store some of its deadliest, but unassembled, missiles like the Chinese M-11 in a sub-depot near the central ammunition depot in Sargodha. It is also the place where Pakistan's nuclear capable F-16 aircraft are said to be stationed. Located on the west of Lahore, Sargodha has always been the hub of Pakistan air force and, in fact, is home to its central air command.

If what Pakistan is doing is just a precautionary measure, considering Sargodha is a sensitive nuclear facility under threat from the Taliban and other terrorists, this has not been communicated to India either by Islamabad or the US which is fast taking it upon itself to safeguard all nuclear facilities in the country. In fact, the first attack on a nuclear installation by terrorists in Pakistan took place in Sargodha in November 2007.

According to Indian officials, Pakistan in the past has used Sargodha to store M-11 missiles which had been delivered unassembled to it by China. However, the pace at which these tunnels are coming up suggests that, as the official put it, Pakistan is up to something. Sargodha is also the place which the Chinese are said to regularly visit to train the Pakistanis in handling weapons and missiles.

Bhartiya Janta Party cannot rake up Ram Janmabhoomi campaign once more

BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Arun Shourie, who had launched a broadside against leadership of his party after its Lok Sabha poll debacle,

appears to suggest that BJP cannot whip up the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign again.

"You can't fire a bullet twice. The time has passed. Today the issue is delivery," he said.

On criticism within sections of the BJP who feel that the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was now resembling a noose around the party leadership's neck, Shourie said, "That's bunk...I myself was a strong supporter of the Ayodhya movement because one of the principle corrections that was required to Indian public discourse since independence was on the perversion of the meaning of the word secular.

"And the movement, which got personified by Mr (L K) Advani, was a very strong corrective in that regard," he told a news channel.

On the eve of the debate in Parliament on the Liberhan Commission report on Babri mosque demolition, Shourie said, "It is an idiotic report...17 years of public money should have been wasted on this gentleman and his staff! It is a crime".

He said, "It has the most elementary errors. I went through the report and there are so many howlers in it, like the kar sewaks cannot be identified but they were this, that... you can't identify them, (but) you know their character."

Shourie parried a question on his earlier criticism of the party that it was resembling a 'kati patang' (A kite without a string).

"I was allowed that freedom to raise my points. I had my say. It's for the party to see whatever they want to do," he said.

Acer India Unveils Multi-touch Laptop Preloaded with Windows 7

Acer recently introduced a laptop with multi-touch display. This technology follows a slew of other new technology products introduced by Acer into the mainstream Indian PC market.

The Acer Aspire 5738PzG series includes a 15.6-inch screen with advanced multi-touch technology with fingertip precision.

The company also launched an All-In-One PC featuring the multi-touch technology. The Aspire 5600 series All-In-One PC has a minimalist design scheme and comes with Microsoft's Touch Pack for Windows 7.

Commenting on the newly launched products, S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India, said, "The intuitive features of Aspire 5738PzG make computing fun and easy. Multi-touch input brings a new dimension to laptop functionality as it offers a natural way for users to interact with PCs."

This laptop will come preloaded with Windows 7, which has native touchscreen support and enables ease of everyday tasks like document or printer sharing, photo editing/sharing, emailing. The Aspire 5738PzG, powered with the all-new Windows 7, facilitates new ways to engage with Windows Touch and Windows Media Center, apart from ensuring easier wireless networking.

The Aspire 5738PzG laptop is priced at Rs. 43,500 including taxes and the Aspire 5600 series AIO is priced starting at an end-user price of Rs. 60,000, inclusive of taxes. The Touch Notebook would be available at leading LFRs and Acer Malls.

Volkswagen Beetle and Touareg launched!

Volkswagen has launched the timeless Beetle supermini and the Touareg SUV as its halo brands. Prepare for more from the company soon!

Volkswagen has launched its super-successful New Beetle in the Indian market today. The car has been introduced with a price tag of Rs 20.45 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The car will be available as a CBU through Volkswagen dealerships.

The New Beetle has been launched with 115 bhp, 2.0-litre petrol engine. Adding to the comfort and ease of use will be the 6-speed automatic gearbox. The charm and appeal of the New Beetle nevertheless remains with its classic styling, inspired by the original people?s car that went on to become the best selling car of a single design in the world in its decades long run.

The New Beetle was introduced internationally in 1998 and has been a success ever since. In fact it was the car that can be credited with kicking off the retro-chic segment, in which modern and comfortable interpretations of long standing classic cars are making a rapid resurgence as fashion statements. Amongst these are the MINIs, and the Fiat 500 which is already on sale in India.

The pull of the Beetle brand however has already established itself strong here, with the company already reporting about 125 confirmed bookings for the New Beetle despite its premium pricing.

Volkswagen also had a surprise launch at the evening, the massive Touareg SUV. Launched at a price of Rs 51.84 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, the SUV will come with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel engine. The car shares many of its aggregates with the Porsche Cayenne, and is expected to go up against the likes of the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

One of the reasons YouTube - the world's largest video sharing site - does not have great traffic emanating out of broadband starved countries such as India is that its videos tend to be heavy, and also the number of distractions that are present on the page.

Yes the distractions such as the scores of links on the page, related videos, channels names, etc are a necessary evil (and in a perfect broadband scenario a great value-add to the viewer), but they can be also be dispensed with and the viewer won't miss much.

So, not surprisingly, YouTube said it is now experimenting with a lightweight version of its video player pages, christened "feather". As YouTube puts it: "Let's face it: in this age of instant gratification, even several seconds of loading time can feel like an eternity. With all of this in mind, 'Feather', an ultra light watch page, launches today in TestTube, our ideas incubator where we test out new products. As you can see by the below screenshot, the player still features prominently, but will default to standard quality. Related videos, comments and other familiar features from the current watch page are kept to a minimum. All of this results in a user experience that aims to keep things simple and the videos loading and playing quickly. If we see adoption go up along with improvements in latency, we'll look to roll this out of TestTube and make it more widely available." If you are one of those affected by slow speeds, you can try out the new Feather pages on www. youtube. com/ testtube, the web page where YouTube puts out its experiments for the general public.

Leading technology site CNET says: "It's worth noting the feature does not yet appear to work on all videos just yet. We had the best luck on popular videos, including those from YouTube's featured section. Also, if you're a YouTube power user who regularly makes use of things such as video replies and user comments, it's worth staying on the standard version of the service."

Amjad Ali & Rahman nominated for the Grammies

While last year, it was two nominations for jazz musician Louis Banks, this year, Rahman has received two nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has received one for his album Ancient Sounds, a Times Music release, in the traditional world music album category. He has composed the album in collaboration with Iraqi oud soloist Rahim AlHaj.

Says Ustad Khan, "I feel happy but I still think the sarod has a long way to go, as far as international recognition is concerned. I was praying that Amaan and Ayaan get nominated, and all of a sudden I get news that I'm in the running for the Grammy!" Would he like to say something to AR Rahman? "I really wish him all the luck. He's young and is bringing Indian music unprecedented recognition. Hope he gets the Grammy." And how hopeful is he himself of winning? "The most deserving will win. Inshallah, the Grammy comes home."

Says Amaan Ali, Ustad Khan's son. "Abbu has done his father, his family and his country proud! " While the news was out on the net late Thursday night, brothers Amaan and Ayaan got to know of it only the next morning. "Ayaan and I had a performance in Bangalore. We were on our way to the hotel when Ayaan said, 'Bhai, guess what happened! Abba has been nominated for the Grammy!'" said Amaan, "Abba just thanked God and wished that we'd played with him for that album."

The father and sons will be off to Germany for a tour. So, no celebrations? "Well, Abbu's a quiet person. He's happy with all the messages coming in but I doubt if he'll make a big deal out of it!" replies Amaan.

Volkswagen Beetle launched in India | volkswagen beetle india price Rs 20.45 lakhs

Volkswagen's New Beetle is here. The new version of the iconic Beetle came to India on Friday, and will sell at a price of Rs 20.45 lakhs ex-showroom New Delhi. Initially, the Beetle was expected to hit Indian roads by mid-2009. No matter.

The so-called New Beetle will serve as mostly as a means to build Volkswagen's brand in India. The company is planning the launch if its small car market play – the Volkswagen Polo small car – very soon, and the more visibility they get for the Beetle, the better for the Polo.

According to the Economic Times, the VW Beetle has received 150 orders already, and deliveries would start on 5th Dec, 2009.

The clientele for the new VW Beetle will definitely be limited in India – at a price of Rs 20.45, the car does not appeal to the value car buyer, or the premium car buyer. But it does appeal – a lot – to automotive enthusiasts.

The Beetle that comes to India will have a 24500 cc, four cylinder engine producing 115 bhp and power is transmitted to the front wheels through a the six-speed auto transmission.

You get top-end safety features, ESP, ABS, four airbags, 3-point inertia reel seat belt system at front and rear, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, power steering. Colour-keyed door mirror housings, door handles and bumpers are also part of the standard package.

Volkswagen also announced the launch of its latest Touareg SUV at the launch of the Beetle. Bookings have already opened for the small car Polo too.

FIFA World Cup 2010 schedule declared

The complete schedule for FIFA World Cup 2010 has been announced. The 2010 Footbal World Cup will be held in South Africa from June 11, 2010.

The Opening match will be played between host South Africa and Mexico at Johannesburg on June 11.

The match will start at 10. am (ET). The second match will be played on same day at 2.30 pm (ET) between France and Uruguay.

All the 32 teams have been divided into eight groups i.e. Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F, Group G and Group H. Each Group has four teams.

The FIFA announced the World Cup 2010 Draw here on Friday night. Brazil North Korea, Ivory Coast and Portugal are in Group of Death i.e Group G.

The group Teams are as following:

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France.

Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece.

Group C: England, United States, Algeria, Slovenia

Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana.

Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon.

Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia.'

Group G: Brazil North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal.

Nokia E72 vs Sony Ericsson Satio vs Samsung Corby

Competition has been hotting up in the smartphone segment. With the consumer sentiment improving, mobile companies have released a slew of devices across price segments While the world's top cellphone maker Nokia added another business phone -- E72-- to its line-up this week, other key players in the segment like Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC and LG too have not been far behind in bolstering their mobile portfolio in the Indian market.

Here's looking into the three big launches of Nokia (E72), Samsung (Corby Mate) and Sony Ericsson (Satio).

Looks

Nokia E72: In looks Nokia E71 appears largely identical to Nokia E72. Measuring 114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm, the phone weighs 128 grams. It boasts of a super slim body at 10mm frame. The phone sports a 2.36 inches TFT display and full QWERTY keyboard.

Samsung Corby Mate: Samsung's Corby Mate is a slider phone with a QWERTY keypad.

Sony Ericsson Satio: The phone measures 112mm x 55mm x 13.3 mm (LxWxD) and weighs 126 gm. The mobile phone comes with a 3.5 inch, 360 x 640 touchscreen.

Specs

Nokia E72: The phone packs a standard 3.5 mm audio jack as opposed to the 2.5 mm in E71. The 360MHz CPU in the E71 has been replaced with the 600MHz CPU. The phone ships with a noise cancellation feature. It also comes pre-installed with Nokia Messaging and a host of Office Productivity Suites as well.

Samsung Corby Mate: The slider phone is loaded with a wide range of social networks support, such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Corby Mate provides quick messaging access, threaded inbox, and shortcuts for direct access to social networking sites, from the phoneâs home screen. On multimedia front, it comes with FM Radio with RDS.

Sony Ericsson Satio: Satio is powered by ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor and PowerVR SGX graphics. Other features include: USB port, FM Stereo, HTML browser, accelerometer, support for multiple audio and video formats and Java support.

Operating system

Nokia E72: The phone is based on Symbian OS Series 60 platform.

Samsung Corby Mate: The phone runs on Samsung's proprietary OS.

Sony Ericsson's Satio: The phone too runs on a Symbian operating system.

Memory

Nokia E72: As for the memory, the phone comes with an internal memory of 250MB, which can be further expanded upto 16GB.

Corby Mate: With 40MB of internal memory and MicroSD card support, the device has enough space for multimedia.

Sony Ericsson Satio: The phone comes with 128MB of onboard memory and supports microSD cards of upto 32GB.

Camera

Nokia E72: The mobile phone boasts of a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and Carl Zeiss optics. Users can record videos at VGA resolution of 640480px.

Sony Ericsson Satio: The phone packs a 12.1 megapixel camera with Xenon Flash. It also carries Face and Smile Detection technology.

Samsung Corby Mate: The phone's camera is a very basic 2 megapixel.

Record haul by Virender sehwag and India | sehwag triple century | ind v sl

The second day at the Brabourne Stadium was all about Virender Sehwag. He has pulverised bowling attacks before, but this was astounding even by his standards. His unbeaten 284 has so far consumed 239 deliveries, a strike rate of 118.82, which is his fastest 150-plus score in Tests. He features in three of the top four, and five of the top ten fastest double-centuries in Tests.

As was the case in his other big knocks, this one was superbly paced too. He started relatively slowly, scoring only 42 in the first 50 deliveries he faced, before upping the tempo. His next 50 balls fetched 55, while each of the next two 50-ball batches brought more than 70. The rate came down just a little bit towards the end of the day, as Sehwag scored 42 in his last 39 deliveries - even when he was tiring after a long day he still managed a strike rate of more than 100. He finished with 284, just 15 short of the all-time record for most runs in a single day, but it was the top score in a day in the last 76 years.

The table below shows none of the Sri Lankan bowlers escaped the Sehwag onslaught. Among the bowlers who bowled at least ten deliveries to him, all of them leaked runs at at least a run a ball - the most 'economical' was Chanaka Welegedara, who went for 45 in as many balls; against Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath the strike rate was more than 130, while Muttiah Muralitharan, who had another forgettable day, gave away 78 in 70. Along the way, he also became the third-fastest Indian - in terms of innings - to get to 6000 Test runs, after Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. This was also Sehwag's sixth double-century, which puts him in fourth place, after Bradman, Brian Lara and Wally Hammond.

As in most Sehwag innings, he didn't believe in running too many singles and twos - 202 out of his 284 runs came in boundaries, which is an amazing 71%. That puts him only 36 away from the record for most runs in boundaries in a single innings - John Edrich got 238 out of 310 runs in fours and sixes against New Zealand in 1965. Sehwag's 202 puts him in fourth place.

Sehwag's sizzler ensured India scored their highest in a single day - their 443 went past the 417 they had scored on the opening day of the previous Test, in Kanpur.

While Sehwag was outstanding, he also received excellent support from Murali Vijay and Rahul Dravid, both of whom put together double-century partnerships with Sehwag. It's only the second instance in the history of Test cricket of the first two wickets each adding 200-plus runs. The earlier instance had also involved Sehwag and Dravid, with Jaffer being Sehwag's opening partner on that occasion, against South Africa in Chennai last year. After an opening stand of 213, Sehwag and Dravid added 268 for the second wicket in a high-scoring draw.

Let's give a standing ovation to the man who dominated the 80s and 90s and continues to surprise with his talent and willingness to subject himself to roles that require make-up for a complete change in appearance. Mr Amitabh Bachchan, for you Sir... the applause refuses to die off...

Playing a 13-year-old with a rare disease which causes him to age before time, Amitabh is class personified. Displaying an amazing flair and getting into character is like a cake-walk for him as Progeria (the disease he suffers from) ravages his tiny body. A special child with special abilities, Auro immediately makes a special place in your heart as you follow his short and brilliant life.

No self pity, just full of masti a kid his age would be. Auro has friends who form his support system apart from his mother (Vidya Balan) and his grandma who he lovingly calls 'Bum'

R Balakrishnan (aka R Balki) has tackled a very complex subject and has brought out the beauty of relationships in a very forceful manner without even one relationship in the movie going over the top. Be it the relationship between Vidya and Auro; Auro and his Bum, Auro and his friends or even Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan) and his dad (Paresh Rawal). Though centered around Auro and his disorder, Balki manages to draw all relationships to the fore.

Balki also manages to throw a positive light on sticky issues. Although he gets the point of the over-enthusiastic media, use of condoms, abortion and the political angle in, he does not sound preachy.

Christien Tinsley and Dominie Till turn a 66-year-old-plus Amitabh to a very believable 13-year-old with their prosthetic make-up. And Amitabh, with his walking, talking and body language draws you even closer to Auro creating that Aura. Nothing flashy. He just delivers his lines like any, normal 13-year-old would.

Really, this movie is all about Auro and a kid that explodes from Amitabh. Vidya Balan is sedate and super in her role as the caring single mother. Abhishek is solid as the politician who will not let anything come between his dreams and Auro's friend, Vishnu is a treat.

Not much was revealed of the story before the release and I too will not spoil it for you by saying much. All I can say is that the end will have you reaching out for the kleenex.

Yes, Abhishek is his Paa. Yes, it's a rare father-son-son-father story. Yes, I think the makers should also consider putting a proposal to making PAA tax free. Also every paa should take his family for this movie.

Paa kasam, this film will rock you.

Following closely on the heels of the HTC, the first manufacturer to launch a mobile handset based on the Google Android operating system, Samsung has come out with a one-of-its kind mobile device.

Featuring the standard Android 1.5 OS platform, Samsung's Galaxy makes way for a lot of customisation starting right from the way its home screen displays. Just drag icons from the menu screen to the place you want and Voila! You have a home page of your choice. But dragging is not so smooth, thanks to the slow response of the touchscreen.

The 3.2" OLED screen renders a pleasing image quality and at 1.9mm it's the slimmest Android device in the market. The 5-megapixel snapper on board is nothing to talk about with the quality of pictures ranging from good to mediocre. Internet browsing, however, is comfortable and you will never get lost with the superfast GPS that comes packed with it.

The device retails for Rs 28,990.

Samsung Corby S3650 to now be available with Wi-Fi

Samsung Corby S3650 users will now have an inclusion in their handsets. Samsung has added Wi-Fi to their most economical full-touch Corby device, reports Samsung Hub.

Apparently, this handset has got certified by the Wi-Fi association and now the model no has been named S3650W. This news comes after the company had released Wi-Fi to their handset, Star S5230.

The mobile phone boasts of a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity and 2MP camera. Logging on to sites like Facebook or Twitter is quite easy with this device. Other attributes that come with the handset are TouchWiz UI, FM Radio, Bluetooth and microSD card slot.

Supposedly more than 3 million Samsung Corby phones have already been sold, since its launch.

Presumably, Samsung Corby Wi-Fi could hit the stands in January next year and the cost of it is currently under wraps.

Ranbir and Deepika's relationship status is indeed complicated! The couple, who has been together for nearly two years, are currently going through what Ranbir describes as a rough patch.

Everyone was expecting sparks to fly between Ranbir and Priyanka Chopra as the stars were recently shooting in Bangkok. However, sources told a daily, "Ranbir was too much into his own space to even notice his glamourous co-star. He spent most of his time, when not shooting, either at the gym or taking walks and visiting malls."

Will they get back together? "I hope so," said Ranbir with a smile. We hope this gives Deepika some respite who is reportedly feeling miserable without Ranbir.

This time it is comedian Raju Srivastav. Raju survived in the house for nearly 60 days. The comedian was nominated along with co-participants Vindu and Pravesh, but was finally evicted from the house by the audience.

In the past few weeks Raju who is always in a cheerful mood was visibly isolated from the house.

Bigg Boss, a reality TV show airs on entertainment channel Colors and has various celebrities locked inside a house without any connection with the outside world.

Masand's Movie Review: Paa a heart-felt mother-son

Like most kids his age, Auro doesn't want his friends to see his mum dropping him off at school. He's not very fond of girls, and most of his jokes involve the potty and what you place on it. In fact, he seems so obsessed with that particular body part he's nicknamed his grandma 'Bum', because she's got a big one.

Auro, of course, is the protagonist of director R Balki's Paa. He's your average mischievous 12-year-old, except for the fact that he has progeria, a rare medical condition that accelerates the ageing process. So although he's only stepping into his teens, Auro has the body of a 65-year-old.

In what can be best described as a casting masterstroke, Amitabh Bachchan steps into the (relatively) small shoes of Auro. Contrary to what the film's marketing conveys, Paa is actually a mother-son story. Vidya Balan plays single-mum Vidya, who raises Auro with some help from her mother, after dumping her selfish boyfriend in college, when he suggests an abortion. Amol (played by Abhishek Bachchan) is not ready for marriage; he is keen to follow his father into politics.

Years later, Amol, who is now a Member of Parliament, accidentally meets Auro at a school event, both oblivious to the fact that they are father and son.

Much in the same vein as the director's previous film Cheeni Kum, the first half of Paa unfolds breezily, with witty dialogue and clever scenes used effectively to establish the characters and their relationships. Steering clear of pity, even in delicate scenes, Balki avoids the obvious pitfalls that come with stories about characters suffering from grim conditions.

There is however, one major speed-bump before intermission, a track in which the young politician Amol launches into a verbal attack on the media. It sticks out in the film because that scenario is so amateurishly scripted and comes off looking embarrassingly self-righteous.

There are more problems in the film's second half when the tone suddenly turns exceedingly manipulative, and several scenes are stretched unnecessarily like the one in a Delhi metro where Auro questions Amol about the futility of having bodyguards.

Despite these hiccups, Paa is ultimately an engaging film because of its largely original writing. One of the best scenes in the film is a hilarious telephone conversation between Auro and a classmate of his, in which the latter explains just how frustrated he is with his father. Most scenes, in fact, between Auro and his buddies at school are a pleasure to watch because of the natural performances Balki is able to derive from his child actors.

Of the cast Arundhati Naag is endearingly warm as Auro's feisty grandmum, and Pratik Katare gets his timing spot-on as Auro's best friend Vishnu. Abhishek Bachchan is a tad smug as the new-gen politician, and tries a little too hard to force the 'coolness' down our throats.

In the end, Paa belongs to mother and son. Vidya Balan delivers her best work since Parineeta, emerging the emotional soul of this film with a graceful, restrained performance that she constructs with minimal help from the script. She strikes up a warm maternal chemistry with Auro and her scenes with him are the film's most heart-felt.

The centerpiece of the action, of course, is Amitabh Bachchan. Under that excellent prosthetic make-up, his baritone replaced by a childish squeaky voice, Bachchan becomes Auro. There is no trace of the legendary 68-year-old star; what you get is a pitch-perfect performance as a gawky but spirited teenager.

PC Sreeram's dazzling cinematography and Illayraja's soothing score help make up for many of the script's flaws, and ultimately contribute to making Paa an easy, enjoyable watch.

I'm going with three out of five for director R Balki's Paa. Few filmmakers stick their necks out to tell difficult and different stories in these days of mindless entertainers making potloads of money. For their intentions alone, the makers of Paa deserve a thumbs-up.

Trying too hard to be cool, the Himesh Reshammiya-starrer Radio is a misguided film about modern relationships.

Starring the singer-turned-actor as popular radio jockey Vivaan, who decides he's done with relationships after the failure of his marriage, this movie sets up an unlikely scenario where Himesh is pursued by not one but two reasonably beautiful, intelligent women. His ex-wife Pooja (played by Sonal Sehgal) is clearly still in love with him. And from the look of it, he's confused about his feelings for her too. Which is why it doesn't help that he's simultaneously finding himself drawn to Shanaya, a new friend he's recently made (played by Shenaz Treasurywala), who evidently has romantic feelings for him. To complicate things further, the two girls become acquainted and get on rather well. Each loves him so much they try to set him up with the other.

Watch Radio Movie Online

Radio, written and directed by Ishan Trivedi, is an unintentionally hilarious film that unsuccessfully tries to tap the youth and its preoccupation with current fads - from social networking sites like Facebook, to idle chats in coffee-shops.

What the film lacks in story, it tries to make up in screenplay gimmicks. Hence the film's divided into chapters with intriguing titles, and you have comic scenes featuring Paresh Rawal as a fellow radio jockey sprinkled throughout the narrative.

To add insult to injury, Radio features the worst possible performance by an ensemble cast. Sonal Sehgal and Shenaz Treasurywala don't have one acting bone in their body, and the same sadly applies to Himesh too, who clearly seems to have worked on his physique, his hair, his appearance even, but can't seem to do much in the acting department.

To some extent, Himesh's music is the saving grace of Radio, but that's only because everything else about it is so seriously flawed. The dialogue includes absolute gems that will leave you howling in your seat.

I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Ishan Trivedi's Radio. The protagonists in this film repeatedly smash crockery on the floor insisting it's good luck. I wonder whose luck they mean. Not the audience's, I can assure you!

fifa world cup 2010: Sony to release 2010 FIFA World Cup on 3D Blu-ray

PHYSICAL: Company will tie release to rollout of 3D consumer electronics

Sony Corp. has signed on to produce the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D, including plans to deliver programming from the event on 3D Blu-ray Disc.

The company will be producing its coverage using Sony 3D cameras, in anticipation of its expected 2010 rollout of a wide range of 3D consumer electronics, spanning Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, PlayStation 3 consoles and computers.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is readying the 'Official 3D Film' Blu-ray release, becoming one of the first studios to formally commit to releasing advanced 3D content for the home.

The studio hasn't specified street date or pricing information for the forthcoming World Cup title.

However, many studios have been showing off 3D Blu-ray to the public, including Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment at its recent D23 fan expo.

The Blu-ray Disc Assn. should finalize its 3D specifications for Blu-ray by the end of this month.

Sony hopes to make the 2010 World Cup a kick-off point for people to start enjoying advanced 3D content in the home. The event launches in South Africa on June 11 and is set to feature up to 25 soccer matches.

"The transition to 3D is underway, and we at Sony intend to be leaders in every aspect. Our sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup allows us to leverage our cutting-edge 3D technology and premier products with dazzling content to produce a unique and totally compelling viewing experience," said Sony chairman/CEO Howard Stringer. "3D viewers around the world will feel as though they are inside the stadiums in South Africa, watching the games in person."

It's not clear if broadcasters will be airing the event in 3D, enabling people to utilize any 3D TVs they purchase in 2010. But Sony will offer several opportunities to sample the matches in 3D.

There will be public viewing events in seven cities, including Berlin, London and Paris, as part of an 'International FIFA Fan Fest' event. Sony will provide the TV displays to view the event in 3D.

Several retail outlets, including Sony Style stores, will run promotional clips of the studio's planned World Cup 3D film.

Paa Box Office: DDD fares well, best in the Hindi belt; PAA, RS, 3I; Dubai fallout

While the bulk of the Bollywood media gave more enthusiastic recommendation to Karan Johar's Kurbaan which flopped from start itself, the bulk of the november Indian public actually opted for Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan, which hasn't.

Now De Dana Dan has not had a spectacular weekend in Mumbai but the film has seen big turnouts in the Hindi circuits and Saurashtra. The collections all over Saturday were better than Friday. And Sunday was same or better than saturday.

A fall was witnessed on Monday, followed by a stable Tuesday in single screens, which means the film so far is following a normal pattern of a successful film not of movies like Blue or Chandni Chowk to China which crashed all over after 2 days. The film is strong in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh etc, basically the territories Akshay Kumar hits have done well in the past. However the film is also expensively sold and so needs a bit more time. DDD would have been a much
bigger grosser had it released earlier in the year, ahead of comedy hits like Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani and the Diwali winner hit All the Best.

Releasing on December 4th is the Amitabh-Abhishek Bachchan 15 crore fare PAA. The paid screenings in Bombay Thursday for this film are sold out. For the weekend, the advance booking has opened well in parts of south and Bombay circuit. However it is not on par with Bunty aur Babli and Sarkar I. For the Indian public, it appears it is a wait and see situation on PAA.

While it is clear the box office draw of Bachchans came down over the last 2-3 years, it is also relevant to note here that when in full featured roles, the Amitabh-Abhishek Bachchan 1-2 combo has never resulted in a flop.

Releasing alongside PAA is the Himesh Reshammiya-Shenaz Treasurywala fare Radio. The advance bookings for this film are as expected, poor, though the film's music has been appreciated.

Next friday will have Rocket Singh on December 11, whose promos have failed to generate the buzz that Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani managed to, despite featuring the same lead actor (Ranbir Kapoor). While Ajab Prem is a superhit, in fact the top hit of 2009 so far, Rocket Singh is a Yash Raj production, which is coming off its most recent flop Dil Bole Hadippa, in September.

Ending the year of 2009 will be Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots. While the promos have not created a Ghajini type response, Aamir Khan has developed a Tom Hanks-like box office draw over the last few years, combining stardom and acting with quality cinema. Hollywood viewers will recall that in the mid-1990s, Tom Hanks gave a series of blockbusters in America in a similar approach. Hanks, who like Aamir Khan too has been an actor-producer-director, starred in some major box office moneymakers of the era like Forrest Gump.

However broadly speaking, it appears recession in the west has affected box office collections overseas as well as in India this year. If the typical consumer may have gone to movie theater 4 times a year, he may only be attending once or twice. Overseas, the Dubai financial meltdown could further threaten to wipe out the Gulf factor for Bollywood overseas. So far about 70% of overseas market is US/UK. With Gulf making 20%, and rest of the world such as Mauritius and South Africa contributing 10%.
